The Straits Chinese, referred to as “Peranakans” which means “local-born” are the descendants of early Chinese traders who settled down in Malacca during the late 14th century and married native Malay girls. During the course of the next five hundred years or so, the Peranakans evolved a unique culture which was a curious blend of ancient Chinese customs and Malay culture.

Biography

Hails from Hong Kong. Clara Hung Mei Yee is an innovative and renowned watercolour artist who continually finds new ways to present images that evoke a sense of motion and dimension.

Hung Mei Yee has held several exhibitions Taiwan Japan Singapore and HK. Her works are sold worldwide and also collected by the HK Museum. In Singapore, she was commissioned to paint a series paintings of Malay and Chinese artifacts depicting the Peranakan heritage and combining them with local floral and Orchids, being Singapore’s national flower.

Clara Hung Mei Yee watercolours embody vibrant colours, luminosity and translucency. Her distinctive painting style that blends her love of nature with her more specific love of flowers. With her brushwork she can bring flowers to life on paper!

She uses just a few strokes of her brushes to depict the romance, refreshing and elegance of her watercolors. Her works are most welcome by all walks of life.
